Prepare and Plan for your Personal Safety

Dear Members of the App State Community,

Each year, colleges and universities throughout the country recognize September as National Campus Safety Awareness Month. While App State focuses on ensuring your safety year round, this month offers an opportunity to encourage dialogue about safety and violence prevention.

Taking time to prepare and plan for your own personal safety and develop a mindset of preparedness is the best way to give you more control and confidence and reduce your risk of harm in the event of an emergency.

As Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety I’d like to take this opportunity to share some resources and safety tips with you. I encourage you to review these resources and discuss them with your friends, family members and colleagues.

Active Shooter or Armed Intruder Safety Resources

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recommends three key tactics to keep yourself safe in the event of an active shooter attack: Run. Hide. Fight.

I recommend familiarizing yourself with the training resources on our website to help prepare yourself to respond in a way that’s most likely to help you survive an active shooter event regardless of where you are.

Clery Center Recommended Resources for Students and Families

Resources, training programs, and initiatives for college students and their families to help build safe college communities, prevent and report crimes, and understand their rights and options under the Federal Clery Act.

Our department practices proactive community engagement, collaboration and customer service, and our responsibility to protect the safety of our university community is our top priority at all times. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. In addition to offering safety prevention trainings, members of the team and I are always happy to meet with faculty, staff, students and family members, and welcome the opportunity to talk with you about steps you can take to enhance your safety and wellbeing.
