Campus emergency siren test to be conducted June 7
Appalachian State University will test its campus siren warning system at 11:55 a.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Examples of the tones that are used in an emergency or during tests can be heard online by visiting the Siren Warning System webpage on App State’s Emergency Preparedness website. More information about this test.
The mission of the Appalachian State University Mountaineer Safe Walk service is to provide a safety escort service for students during the evening hours. The service area is strictly limited to university properties only (parking lots, residence halls and academic buildings), and is designed specifically to provide assistance to students who may feel uncomfortable walking alone after dark.
Safe Walk is a free, safety escort service available to students in any main campus building or parking lot. A secure ride to and from satellite campus locations is also available from the following locations:
- Mountain Laurel Hall (formerly Appalachian Panhellenic Hall)
- Leon Levine Hall
- 105 parking lot
- State Farm parking lot
View the Safe Walk map layer for satellite safety escort service locations. Select a location from the menu for details.
How to Request Service
Call 828-262-7433 and advise the dispatcher of your location and destination. A safety escort will be dispatched to walk with you, and you will be given the approximate time they will arrive at your location.
Safe Walk escorts wear Appalachian Police Department (APD) Cadet uniforms. Ride shuttles for satellite locations say “Safe Ride” on the side, and drivers wear shirts printed with the APD logo and “App State Safe Ride.”
Hours and Availability
The service is offered during the fall and spring semesters and is available from 9:45 p.m. - 2:45 a.m., seven days a week, excluding university holidays and both summer sessions.
The first call for service will be taken at 9:45 p.m. and the last call for service will be taken at 2:45 a.m.
Due to the large volume of students returning to campus on Sunday evenings, Safe Ride service does not serve the Appalachian 105 freshman parking area on Sunday evenings until 1 a.m. Instead, a dedicated shuttle service to campus is provided every 30 minutes by a large bus from the AppalCART fleet.
AppalCART “Night Owl” Service
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, AppalCART offers a "Night Owl" service until 2:30 a.m. Due to call volumes, it is recommended to use AppalCART's Night Owl services on those nights. Learn more about AppalCART “Night Owl” service.
For more information, please call Mountaineer Safe Walk during operating hours at 828-262-7433. Please direct any questions to the Appalachian Police Department (APD) by email or phone (828-262-2150).
