Crime Alert Update: Sexual Assault

This is an update to the Crime Alert that was originally sent on September 9th, 2014 regarding the sexual assault that reportedly occurred on August 29, 2014 in a wooded area near the tennis courts behind the athletic complex. No Sexual Assault occurred.
As a result of the investigation conducted by ASU Police and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, it has been determined that the incident did not occur and there is no ongoing threat to the University community. The description of the suspect and all previous information can be disregarded.
As part of our standard protocol the investigative findings will be sent to the Watauga County District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s Office will review for potential criminal charges of a false report to law enforcement officials.
NCGS: 14-225. False reports to law enforcement agencies or officers.
Any person who shall willfully make or cause to be made to a law enforcement agency or officer any false, deliberately misleading or unfounded report, for the purpose of interfering with the operation of a law enforcement agency, or to hinder or obstruct any law enforcement officer in the performance of his duty, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.
